Isn’t it a bit confusing reading about all the different types of air-purifiers that are available in the market today? If you were to do a search on the Internet for air-purifiers you will be presented with literally thousands of websites, all of which sell a variety of air purification machines. One of the most popular air-purification systems is a HEPA air purifier.

HEPA Filters

An acronym for ‘high efficiency particulate arresting’, a HEPA filter theoretically is capable of removing almost 99.97 % of airborne particles of .3 micrometers or larger. These would include common irritants and allergens like dust, pollen, mold and bacteria. The original HEPA filter was designed in the 1940’s during the Manhattan Project by the US Atomic Commission to prevent the spread of airborne radioactive contaminants which were a result of atomic bomb testing. These were made commercially available in the 1950’s and HEPA became the registered trademark and a generic name for highly efficient filters. Over the years HEPA filters have been further developed to satisfy a greater demand for air purity not only in homes but also in various industries like aerospace, electronic micro circuitry, biopharmaceutical labs, and in office and commercial complexes. There are also Ultra-HEPA or ULPA filters available whose ability to filter dust and other contaminants is even better than HEPA filters. It filters out 99.99% of the contaminants.

Allergy Relief [http://www.air-purifier-spot.info/best-allergy-relief-air-purifiers.htm]

True HEPA filters, are excellent for removing all types of contaminants that are greater than .3 microns in size. One micron is approximately one hundredth times smaller than the width of your hair. So, you can visualize just how tiny .3 micron is and the capability of this filter to be able to trap and remove such particles. Thus when buying a HEPA filter do ensure that you’re buying a true HEPA filter and not a HEPA type filter as the efficiency of the latter ranges from 25-95%, while true HEPA filter is 99.97% efficient in removing airborne particles.

In addition, HEPA filters provide a dry environment, ensuring the complete elimination of the trapped bacteria as it cannot survive in dry conditions. Some filters are chemically treated to kill bacteria while others may include a germicidal ultra violet light to achieve the same effect.

HEPA Air Purifiers are noisier than other filters because they use a motorized fan to suck in the air. However, when purchasing the purifier one must note the performance of the fan motor as a weak motor will not be able to draw in satisfactory amount of air for the purifier to be effective. The filter usually needs to be replaced every 12-18 months, depending on the usage of the purifier. The life span of a HEPA filter usually ranges from two to five years.

By and large HEPA air purifiers are rated the best in terms of overall performance and ability to filter out microscopic particles.

A whole house air cleaner is a system that cleans, filters and frees the air of allergens and pollutants. These purifiers filter air throughout a whole home and always could be found in specific units situated within the HVAC. There are lots of benefits when using these purifiers, the main benefit being that they could clean the air in bigger areas than the traditional handy units.

Most of the whole house air cleaners utilize filters. They hold and trap pollutants, airborne allergens, and microorganisms as well. The pollutants that a system could trap depends on the filter type being utilized, with more advanced and smaller filters costing more than ones that let some microscopic organisms pass through.

The filter type chosen would be stated by the requirements of the consumer. For a person who just wants fresher, cleaner air throughout the house, a standard model will do. A person who has severe lung disorders, allergies, or some other breathing difficulties might benefit much more from advanced filtrations.

There are whole house air cleaners that showcase humidifiers that operate with the system as well. These cleaners help keep a consistent humidity level through the house and lessen some symptoms of allergy like sinuses and dry eyes. It’s significant to regularly change the water in these cleaners to avoid accumulation of molds.

If the house being filtered is huge or in a pollutant and allergen prone area, it’s significant to always change filters. Filters must be checked regularly to make sure that dirt and dust haven’t gathered to the inhibited performance point. To increase the efficiency of a whole house air cleaner, portable units could be bought separately.

Buying a whole house air cleaner could be a big investment. To make sure the best quality system is bought for the price, it is a great idea to look for different kinds of electronic filtration systems on the Internet or by consulting a local provider. There might be different kinds of filters accessible, as well as new systems which use negative ions or ultraviolet light to clean the atmosphere. Each choice has its own pitfalls and benefits, so knowing each of them would help users make smarter purchasing decisions.

Ask for warranty along with suggestions for air testing processes. An individual with a very severe allergy or illness must perform routine air tests in their houses to make sure that the quality of the air is improving making use of the air purifier. If after a few days of use, there’s no change, the company must be contacted for more info on repairs, refunds, or ways to develop effectiveness.

You can find space heater reviews all over the Internet. Reputable websites like ConsumerReports.org will give you plenty of unbiased information if you are a subscriber. First, decide what you need from a space heater, then it will be easier for you to do research to find the one that is best for you.

Look for certain things when shopping for a space heater. First, you must determine what you need it for. If you want to heat your garage or separate work area you should get a heater with a fan. A fan will easily circulate the warm air inside the room. A small radiant heater will be perfect if you just need a heater to keep your legs and feet warm. There may be some days when you don’t want to turn your central heating unit on but you want to get the chill out of the air. A portable room heater works well in those situations.

Portable space heaters are at their best when you just need to heat one room. Most space heater reviews will tell you which appliance is best for heating up a room quickly for a short time or heating a room consistently for a longer period.

Be careful when using a portable room heater. Some of the older electric heaters will get VERY hot to the touch. Place the heater at least three feet from curtains and other flammable objects. Do not allow children to play near and do not dry clothes on top of them. Make sure your heater has the UL listed stamp on it. If your heater is several years old, consider getting a newer model. You can now find electric room heaters that do not get hot.

There is the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning when using propane heaters inside. If a propane space heater does not specifically list that it can be used indoors, you should only use it outside or with good ventilation. As a propane heater runs, the oxygen in the air is depleted and carbon monoxide is created. Because the oxygen in the air is reduced, the carbon monoxide can easily enter the bloodstream. With prolonged exposure the user may lose consciousness and die.

Almost all heaters give off the same amount of heat. Most space heater reviews will compare the way the heat is distributed, the safety features and the convenience of the item. Price isn’t a very big factor because there is a good space heater for any price range. Don’t be fooled, the best heaters are not always the most expensive.

A portable space heater can easily take the chill out of the air. Get more information on the different types of units. Find out which are the best portable heaters and which one is right for you.

Previously, the Air Purifier Review – 4 Key Factors Model was introduced. A detailed survey based on that model was sent to several key air purifier manufacturers. Sadly, save for one, no one else responded. It is puzzling, to say the least, for them to ignore users of air purifiers. Do they not make them for end users like us? Are we not the most likely to buy an air purifier? The muted response is disheartening but we are not about to abandon our efforts to build an information database for all users and potential users of air purifiers to make well-informed choices.

Further to our most recent post, we have now included Scientific Peer Review as the fifth key factor in our air purifier review model. Even though it is likely to draw a blank in the foreseeable future, it is unavoidable. Firstly, the starkness may encourage someone to be the debutante in producing the first recognized scientific peer review for an air purifier technology.

But more seriously, the lack of scientific peer reviews is a major stumbling block to the air purification industry. It has failed to win over crucial participants and interested parties like the scientific community (indoor air quality specialists, academics, environmentalists and activists). And most important of all, it has not garnered the endorsement of government agencies like the US EPA and NIOSH and the medical community who deal with allergy issues and other medical conditions blamed on indoor pollution.

Lacking in ALL air purification technologies

There is not a single air purifier review that contains a scientific peer review. Note that this problem is not confined only to the ionic air purifier industry. It also plagues all other technologies in the air purifier industry, be it the venerable HEPA and the new-kid-on-the-block (relatively speaking) photo-catalytic oxidation, etc.

Why does no one in the air purification industry taken cognizance of this? Instead, the industry focuses its efforts on convincing the consumer. Millions are spent on advertising. Good money that could have been better spent. Why are they blind to the fact that the consumer base would multiply manifold if only there is one, just one scientific peer review?

It is a no brainer. As an integral part of any air purifier review, the scientific peer review is the holy grail of the air purifier industry. Whoever gets it first may well have the same mythical power of leadership in the multimillion dollar business.

Given the superlative (an understatement) importance of a scientific peer review, the biggest mystery is why no one has deemed it worthwhile to produce a single review. It is understandable that no air purifier manufacturer has commissioned one since that would negate the independence factor that is central to a scientific peer review.

What is puzzling is why no scientist or researcher, especially the most qualified ones in the indoor air quality or environmental sciences disciplines, considers it worthwhile to do an air purifier review. Being the first to produce a recognized scientific peer review in a multimillion industry must surely put one in the spotlight and open funding doors of further research. And we know that initial funding is not an issue as we have a direct quote from the US NIOSH that it is prepared to fund a scientific peer review that is professionally drawn up with the requisite parameters.

That no scientist or researcher is willing to embark on the quest for a truly independent scientific peer review begs the million dollar question – is the air purification industry a big fraud on the consumer? Or do the scientists view it as a futile task comparable to hunting for the Holy Grail – truth that cannot be grasped?

The inability to answer these intriguing questions drives us to greater inquiry with our 5-Key Factors Model. The reticence of manufacturers to complete our survey questions based on the said model piques us to delve deeper.

To recap, the Air Purifier Review – 5-Key Factors Model is as follows:

(1) Safety - in relation to the reactive agent

(2) Safety - in relation to unintentional by-products

(3) Efficacy - the reactive agents work in the lab

(4) Efficiency - the reactive agents work in the real world

(5) Scientific Peer Review

We had previously explained each of the above factors at length. We hope that manufacturers will see the need to be more transparent. After all, we are their customers. It is senseless for them to ignore us.

Do sign up at our blog too as we are about to launch our first product review using our Air Purifier Review Model.

Min En writes on The Ionic Air Purifier Blog. His healthy cynicism about manufacturers’ commercial claims is transformed into positive energy that drives him to do very thorough research before buying any product. The Ionic Air Purifier Blog at http://www.ionic-airpurifiers.com/ documents his hunt for the ideal ionic air purifier.

If you or perhaps one of your children has asthma, chances are that you have been looking for anything and everything out there that can help ease the symptoms of the condition. Few people probably ever stop to think about it that don’t suffer from it, but asthma is a debilitating condition that can make life very difficult to cope with, especially for children who have not yet learned to get a handle on their own health. Don’t look at an asthma air purifier as a way to treat the condition, but it may be a way to help. Air purifiers can get nasty things out of the air that can irritate the lungs and senses of asthma sufferers, so even though air purifiers are not a reliable form of treatment, they are certainly not something that should be disregarded either.

But of course this comes with a price.

Depending on the type of air purifier you are looking at, there are a couple of price points that should be considered. It is all too easy to overpay for an air purifier thinking that it will make a world of difference when in all actuality; whether or not it will ease the asthma symptoms of your loved ones are up in the air. Sharper Image has some amazing air purifiers that could be great for a person who is suffering from asthma, as there are several different models and types to choose from. The Ionic Breeze is one of their most popular, as it has the capability of pulling dust, pollen, smoke, and even germs and other small organisms out of the air that we breathe. It’s a great one to try but the price tag associated with it is a bit high.

So do a little research on yourself first. That means before you buy you need to figure out what your asthma triggers are. That way you can get a purifier that works best against those triggers. HEPA air purifiers, for example, can be less expensive, but they are not very effective against mold. So if mold triggers your asthma attacks, this would not be the best choice.

These days you don’t have to leave your home to do any shopping. The internet is your friend when it comes to shopping, especially for something like an asthma air purifier. You don’t have to try it on and the color doesn’t have to match anything that you own so you are free to order it online with no repercussions, so long as you are getting it from a reliable source. Reviews of the more popular models are available with a quick search. Read them. Find out their strengths and weaknesses from others who have used them.

If you have asthma and you are on the lookout for something to get you at least a little bit of relief, then an air purifier might do the trick for you. If you are looking for a miracle contraption to make you feel 100 percent once you get home every day, you probably are not going to find that in an air purifier.

Finding the best air purifier is easy once you identify exactly what you want the purifier to accomplish. In regards to flood damage, manufacturers have designed purifiers that are capable of capturing and removing mold and bacteria from the air and from surfaces. If you’re looking for an extremely high quality air purifier then a brand like the Iqair Healthpro is an excellent choice. If you’re looking for an air cleaner that is a bit less powerful than Iqair purifiers (and not as expensive) but just as reliable, you’re in luck too.

Dangers of Mold

Once flood water subsides, one of the next steps in water damage clean up is to tackle air quality problems in the home. Dangerous mold and mildew will start to appear and grow in spores while having a detrimental effect on the air that you and your family are breathing in. This can be a concern to consumers who have allergies and are sensitive to airborne particles. It’s important to improve the quality of air in the house in the most effective way possible.

Air Purifiers and Mold

There are many great air cleaners to choose from and one award winning design is from Blueair. Blueair air purifiers are made in Sweden and provide great filtration of mold spores, bacteria and other airborne irritants. They offer many different models, from compact air purifiers for smaller rooms to purifiers that provide coverage up to 698 sq. ft.

The price tag ranges from approximately $200 to over $700 depending on style. The only drawback of the cheaper Blueair purifiers is that they cover less space but this makes them ideal for personal use in a bedroom or small apartment.

The purifiers are very energy efficient across the board and are great for those who want a quiet air purifier for their home.

What makes the air purifiers so effective against mold spores is their ability to capture the tiniest of particles 99% of the time. This makes for excellent filtration and airborne mold control at the touch of a button. You also get the comfort of having Hepa air filters as the standard.

Let’s take a quick review and see what some of these purifiers have to offer:

The Blueair 203 HepaSilent Purifier uses HEPASilent(TM) technology, a combination of the best features of electrostatic and mechanical filter technology that allows delivery of more clean air, at a faster rate, with less noise. The 203 is among the highest energy efficient and quietest operating air purifiers in its class, with a room capacity of 175 sq. ft

The Blueair 270E Electronic Purifier also uses HEPASilent(TM) technology, and comes with an easy to use remote control and digital display system that gives the user instant feedback of particle detection, air purifier speed and timer operation.

Lastly, the Blueair 603 Purifier cleans more air, more efficiently. In rooms as large as 640 square feet, our patented two-stage HEPASilent(TM) technology captures 99.97% of 0.1 micron particles, including allergy-provoking pollen grains, dust mites, mold spores and pet dander particles.

The list is endless; this is just a small sample of what Blueair has to offer. With the many designs available, you are sure to find the one that will work best for you if you decide to go with brand or another.

Dynamic air cleaners are intended to replace the common one inch furnace filter, and purify the air in your home by using your existing HVAC system. These types of whole house air purifiers are considered superior to other filters because of the unique filtration process used to not only clean the air, but also they capture harmful and unwanted particles in the air.

This process is known as electro-filter technology and has been used around the world in manufacturing plants, office buildings, hospitals, restaurants, bars, and thousands of homes. They use a process known as electrostatic polarization. The electric filter pad used in this process attracts even the smallest particles in the air just as a magnet would attract tiny metal filings. Most air cleaner filters are inefficient because they only remove 20% of particles out of the air.

Other electronic filters are constructed with a metal mesh and a filter on each side. These are the types of filters that you must change out on a regular basis, they can be messy and it takes time. Dynamic air cleaners filter packs combine two filters that are sewn together with a carbon filter between the two outer filters. They are also insulated to prevent arcing or the production of ozone. They are easy to replace and are not messy in the least bit.

Dynamic air cleaners can remove as much as 99% of the smallest dust particles in your home, down to one micron in size. They will effectively eliminate more dust in your home than any furnace filter on the market today. To get a clear perspective of how effective this process is, consider that a human hair measures approximately 150 microns and the smallest particle the human eye can see is about 10 microns. For allergy sufferers this equates to cleaner breathable air, resulting in a decrease in respiratory and other health problems.

Dynamic air cleaners replace your existing one inch furnace filter and come complete with either a plug-in adapter or stripped wire that can be hardwired directly in to your electrical panel. Maintenance of dynamic air cleaners is quite simple also. Simply slide out the filter and replace the center carbon pack. No need for any extensive cleaning and no need to buy a new filter. By using this type of air purifier you turn your existing HVAC system into a high-efficiency whole house air purifier so you and your family get to enjoy fresher, cleaner air year-round.

Dynamic air cleaners will reduce allergies and other health problems in your home by providing you with fresh clean air.

In May 2005, the respected publication “Consumer Reports” undertook an informed and impartial review of ionic air purifiers. They came to the conclusion that a generally healthy individual would really be better off without one, although they did comment that such air purifiers could be useful for those suffering with serious heath issues such as asthma, acute allergies or bronchitis.

Should You Buy One Anyhow?

If you have been considering the purchase of an ionic air purifier just for the sake of it and you do not have any kind of severe breathing problems as mentioned earlier, then forget it – you could end up doing yourself some real damage.

To begin with, there really isn’t anything so small in the atmosphere doing you any harm that this technology could filter out.

It’s strongly recommended by “Consumer Reports” and various other product reviews that healthy people should not use one of these kinds of purifiers. The sole exception to this was for a non-smoker who had the misfortune of living with a person who smokes. The only real cure for this is to either convince the smoker to give up tobacco or move out of the house but until the time that either of these occurs, an air purifier like the Ionic Pro will help reduce the stink and irritation caused by the smoker.

Concerns of an Environmental Nature

The use of an ionic air purifier should only be by those who will see health benefits from it and even then its use should be kept to a minimum. Using one just because you have one can endanger the earth and add to the global warming problems, not to mention the damage it will do to your bronchial tract and lungs.

Ionic air purifiers work by generating ozone. Yes, you have heard of this before. It’s the same type of ozone that caused the holes in our planet’s outer protective atmospheric layer and in large amounts it is toxic. When you have an ionic air purifier you are exposed to seriously high emissions of ozone and folks have been shown to have ozone in the lungs when using one of these.

To summarize, there’s a lot of unsubstantiated hype when it comes down to air purifiers, whatever type they are. Instead of expecting technology and medicine to rescue us from the problems we encounter, we really should be focusing on putting an end to global warming and not having to rely on electronic gadgets to allow us to breathe clean air deep into our lungs.

Air cleaners and purifiers are becoming ever more necessary as pollution levels rise and more people are developing allergies and asthma. But it’s not as simple as going to the store and asking for an air cleaner. There are different technologies available, from the HEPA filter to the ionic air purifier, and what you choose will depend on your particular circumstances.
