History of the Fan

A fan is defined as a mechanical setup which is used to create a flow of air. Though this is a working definition found over net but most people who have a tri-bladed machine rotating on their ceiling will describe fans as a big relief on a hot day. In fact fans or ‘punkah’ as called in Hindi, is prevalent since 500 BC in India. Even though with modern technology, conventional servants or ‘Punkah-Wallah’ are not required, the importance of a Fan in a household has not changed ever since. In modern times the fan is extended as Air coolers which propel air, which gets cooled after passing through wet mats. Various other applications of basic fan are exhaust fan in kitchens and bathrooms, computer fans cooling the parts, propellers in aeroplanes and table fans amongst others.

History of modern fans can be traced back to early nineteenth century, when they were successfully used in factories and coal mines to pump in air for the diggers. Then in late nineteenth or early twentieth century Tomas Edison with other inventors introduced electrical power to the fans. Ultimately around early twentieth century fans on massive scale were sold in America for household use. Philip Diehl is in fact considered to be the father of modern electric fan.

In India even after introduction of Air coolers and Air conditioners Fans have retained its prime in almost every house. These days most manufacturers are trying to keep with up with increasing purchasing parity of the people. With designer and number of options in terms of style, size and power there is a fan to suit wall colors or taste of every individual.
